Designed for students in grades 7-12, this fun and competitive program places an emphasis on the design, building, and programming processes of robotics. Teams design a robot with both autonomous and driver controlled modes to compete based on the annual Challenge. Core Values remain an integral part of the program, promoting professionalism and friendly competition.

All volunteers are pre-scheduled through the High Tech Kids
Volunteer Coordinator. We are not able to accommodate volunteers who arrive at tournaments without prior communication with us.

Individuals must have transportation to the tournament and be committed to their volunteer role for the entirety of the shift.

ADULT VOLUNTEERS

Individuals must be 18+ and have graduated from High School to volunteer in adult roles.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

Individuals must be in grades 9-12 to apply to volunteer with High Tech Kids, we are unable to accommodate request for younger students to volunteer due to liability.

FIELD MANAGER

Maintain a smooth flow on the field during the event. Field Managers facilitate match timing and smooth traffic flow. The Field Manager has final call for Inspection issues.

Coordinates the competition floor including; team traffic flow, referees, emcee, FTA, scorekeeper, etc.. Maintain smooth flow of matches and pace to keep the tournament on schedule.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+, 9 hour commitment.

Minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

FIELD TECHNICAL ADVISOR (FTA)

Focuses on the team robotic technical issues. Knowledge of the equipment used by teams to build their robot is helpful for this role.

Responsible for managing the technical components that are used during the alliance matches. This individual must be able to problem solve technical issues with the WiFi wireless connection between the robots and the Field Control System on a computer.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+, 9 hour commitment.

Minimum commitment of two days; Friday night set-up lasting 3-4 hours and tournament day (Saturday or Sunday) from 7:30 am – 6:30 pm.

FIELD TECHNICAL ADVISOR ASSISTANT (FTAA)

Supports the FTA in technical assistance on the field.

Assist the Field Technical Advisor to resolve technical problems that arise during the competition. Attention to detail and willingness to assist is necessary. This role is a great opportunity to train as a Field Technical Advisor.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 16+, 9 hour commitment

Minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:30 am – 5:30 pm.

JUDGE

Judges interview teams to learn about their scope and impact. Teams are selected to receive one of nine awards based on their robot design, programming, how they impacted their community through service and outreach, and how they have inspired others through their perseverance and excellence. Judges will report to the Judge Advisor throughout the day.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+ AND 3 years out of a FIRST program, 9 hour commitment.

JUDGE MATCH OBSERVER

Judge Match Observers collect data on the quality of the robot performance during game play. This data is then given to the Judge Advisor to help the Judges during the deliberation process to determine awards.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+ -OR- Age 16+ AND 2 years out of a FIRST program, 9 hour commitment

JUDGE ADVISOR ASSISTANT

Helps to keep the Judges on schedule and provide assistance to the Judge Advisor by keeping paperwork and records in order. Judge Assistants do not participate in discussions or deliberations and must be organized and able to keep judging conversations confidential.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+, 9 hour commitment

Referees observe matches and call rule violations during game play while filling out score sheets for the Scorekeeper. Teams have the opportunity to challenge the rules and Referees work with the Head Referee to make the final call on rules.

Officiate during the robot performance matches. Each match runs 2.5 minute and includes four robots in alliance format. Complete score sheets, ensure teams follow rules and offer encouragement in a fun, energy-charged gymnasium!

Robot Inspectors ensure that all robots follow the guidelines laid out in the Game Manual to compete on the game field before match play begins. Inspectors work with teams to go through the inspection checklist and report to the Field Manager for final calls on requirements.

Evaluate the team’s robot to ensure it is safe to operate while competing at the tournament. Teams are given safety guidelines and provide a Bill of Materials to inspectors. Loose batteries, sharp edges and faulty wiring are a few things to look for in this volunteer role.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+, 3 hour commitment

Minimum commitment of one day (Saturday or Sunday) from 7:30 am – 10:30 am.

SCOREKEEPER

Manage and operate the scoring software to track and communicate scores throughout the tournament.

This individual meticulously records and tracks teams success as they compete during the day. The FIRST Tech Challenge scorekeeping software displays the outcomes of each match, along with rolling overall results and team standings.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+, 9 hour commitment.

Minimum commitment of two days; Friday night set-up lasting 1-2 hours and tournament day (Saturday or Sunday) from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

ASSISTANT SCOREKEEPER

Assist the Scorekeeper in accurately entering all scores into the scoring software in order to provide a smooth game flow.

Assisting the Scorekeeper, this individual meticulously records and tracks teams success as they compete during the day. The FIRST Tech Challenge scorekeeping software displays the outcomes of each match, along with rolling overall results and team standings.

Interviewers are responsible for interviewing the Dean’s List Semi-Finalists to examine their leadership and dedication to FIRST and write notes for each student to help the Reviewers make final decisions. Interviewers will review student’s nominations prior to the interview. You will have 15 minutes to both interview and take notes on each student.

Volunteer Requirements: Age 18+, 2 hour commitment, plus submitting written feedback

Each tournament is coordinated by a Tournament Director and they need support in roles including Field Reset, Queuing, and Concessions. Tournament Directors update their tournament needs and you can find the links for specific tournament needs on the tournament page.
